Flooding concerns over Quoile ‘mismanagement’

Flooding concerns over Quoile ‘mismanagement’

A LOCAL politician has expressed his concern at the state of Downpatrick’s flood defences.

Alliance MLA Patrick Brown claims neglect of the Quoile river and funding cuts contributed to last November’s devastating flood.

Mr Brown, voiced his concerns during an independent flood review session in Downpatrick last Wednesday.

The review, spearheaded by an independent engineering firm on behalf of the Department for Infrastructure, is aimed at identifying the factors contributing to the flooding of the town centre.

Mr Brown claimed that flood management funding had been reduced by 60% and asked the review panel to investigate if that had affected the flood response.

He also highlighted what he described as the “mismanagement” of the Quoile as a contributing factor to the flooding and emphasised the need for better engagement with affected businesses and residents.

Mr Brown said afterwards: The flood review meeting provided a valuable platform for myself and other flood-affected individuals to directly address the challenges encountered last year.

“However, there has been inadequate engagement with the businesses directly impacted, both by Newry, Mourne and Down Council and the Department for Infrastructure.

“Prior to the meeting, I raised this concern with the council, which I have been led to believe failed to individually invite any flooded businesses. Following my intervention, the council promptly included several business representatives at short notice.’

He continued: ‘Nevertheless, I raised pivotal issues concerning cuts to flood management and the prolonged neglect of the Quoile river.

“This review is important  in understanding the contributing factors to the November flooding and devising preventive measures for the future.

“I eagerly anticipate the release of the review findings, which I hope will outline a comprehensive action plan to mitigate future flooding in Downpatrick.’
