Firewalkers do their bit to raise money for charity

21 May 2014

LOCAL fundraisers have proven the power of mind over matter by walking on fire to raise money for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

Edward Brannigan, Joe McMahon and Rita Simons from Newcastle and James McCartan, from Maghera, raised £714 for the foundation through the firewalk, which was hosted by Greenhill YMCA in Newcastle.

The Meningitis Research Foundation estimates that around 3,200 people get bacterial meningitis and septicaemia in the UK and Ireland each year.  Sadly about one in ten people who contract meningitis and septicaemia will die.

The charity’s fundraising officer, Emma McNeill, said the foundation depends almost entirely on voluntary donations to continue its work in Northern Ireland.

“This money will help fund research, raise awareness of the disease, operate our freefone helpline and support those affected,” she said.

The Meningitis Research Foundation will host another firewalk on Thursday, October 30, in Newcastle between 6pm and 9pm.

Participants must be at least 12 years of age to participate and aim to raise at least £100.
