Fashion boost for Newcastle student

A BUDDING bridal designer from Newcastle has received a fashion intern scholarship from Belfast Metropolitan College.

Gordon Donaldson, who is studying for a BSc honours degree in fashion management at the Met, received funding for the placement at the Lizzie Agnew wedding and formal design studio.

Gordon will gain experience in the design process, assist with dressmaking and deal with customers. He will follow this with a work placement at men’s clothing retailer, Rio.

The 20 year-old is due to finish his fashion course at Belfast Met in 2014 and is well on his way to reaching his goal of becoming a top bridal designer. Gordon won the highly coveted Wedding Journal Young Designer of the Year 2012 award for his ice blue satin crepe, courted lace and champagne tuile creation.

Gordon said he was delighted to win the competitive scholarship.

“I feel that it is so important to combine my study with real design experience in established studios and shops, as it has given me valuable insight into the day to day requirements of a designer and how to work well with customers,” he said. “I am thankful to Belfast Met Trust for providing me with the opportunity to develop my skills beyond the normal course of study.”
