Farmer killed by fallen tree

5 November 2014

A CROSSGAR farmer has died following a tragic accident last week.

Harry McCullagh died on Wednesday, two days after becoming trapped by a fallen tree while chopping firewood at Killyleagh Road.

He had spent seven hours under the tree on Monday afternoon before the emergency services came to his aid.

The Health and Safety Executive has confirmed it is investigating the accidental death. An Executive spokeswoman said their thoughts were with his family at such a difficult time.

Tributes have been paid to the grandfather, who is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family.

Down Council chairman William Walker extended his condolences to the family following the tragic accident.

He said their loss would be particularly felt in the run-up to Christmas.

“It is always hard when you lose someone in tragic circumstances but perhaps even more so in the approach to the festive period,” he said.

“Mr. McCullagh, as I understand, was originally from Monaghan but made his home in this district.

“I would, as council chairman, offer my condolences to his family on behalf of the council.”

Mr. Walker’s sympathy was echoed by Crossgar councillor Terry Andrews, who knew Mr. McCullagh.

He said Mr. McCullagh always had time for a passing chat.

“This is a very sad accident and a terrible loss for his family,” he said.

“He was a very down to earth man who would always stop for a chat when walking by and my thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time.”

Following Mr. McCullagh’s accident, local Fire Service commander, Mr. James McAllister, warned lone rural workers to take extra care.

“I wish to appeal to the community living and working in the rural environment to take precautions when working alone,” he said.

“Always inform someone where you are and what you are doing.

“Make regular contact with that person so they can raise the alarm if there is a failure to make contact. This can be done using a mobile or a two-way radio.”
