A BALLYHORNAN farming family has been praised for playing a key role in helping pave the way for a new 3G soccer pitch in the village.

John and Michael Trainor have agreed to adjust the boundary of their property to facilitate the new pitch which will be built close to the Ballyhornan Community Centre.

Mr. Michael Trainor said his family has seen plans for the new pitch and is delighted to be able to support the project. He said the land which has been identified for the new pitch is already the property of the Ballyhornan Family Centre and that the right of way between it and land belonging to the Trainor family has been correctly delineated.

“If any adjustments to boundaries are needed we would be pleased to make the necessary adjustment at no cost to the Ballyhornan Family Centre,” added Mr. Trainor.

Mrs. Patricia Curran, chairwoman of the Family Centre said, it appreciates the on-going support of the Trainor family which will make the delivery of the new pitch a lot easier.

She added: “The revenue generated from the new pitch will make a very valuable addition to our income and make the Ballyhornan centre sustainable for the long term.”

The Trainor family’s decision has also been praised by councillor Cadogan Enright, commending their “pubic spirit and support for their local community.”

He continued: “The Trainor family has been supportive of the new pitch proposal through the planning stages and their decision to adjust the boundary of their property could now secure planning approval.”

Councillor Enright said he also believes the provision of the new pitch is being taken over by Down Council’s Recreation and Community Services department.

He said it is his understanding that the Social Investment Fund will announce shortly if it is to provide financial support to the Ballyhornan project.

Councillor Enright added: “If this funding is made available it would speed up the process in delivering the new pitch, reducing Down Council’s financial contribution to the project to £25,000.”
