Eve aiming for London challenge

17 February 2016

A YOUNG Newcastle athlete is set to take part in the world renowned Virgin Money Giving Mini London Marathon festivities in April.

Twelve year-old Eve Kenneally, representing Shimna College, finished an excellent sixth at the Ulster Schools’ minor girls U-13 age group at the Milk IT Ulster Schools Cross Country Championship at Mallusk last Tuesday and that qualifies her to run in London.

The championship is also used as the Northern Ireland selection race for the London Mini Marathon and is the official British Athletics three-mile road championships for young athletes aged between 11 and 17.

The mini marathon is held each year on the same day as the London Marathon, to inspire the next generation of athletes and past participants of it include Mo Farah and Newcastle AC’s Joanne Mills.

Joanne was at Mallusk watching Eve run, and was first to congratulate her on the selection and provide advice on what to expect in London. Eve’s race starts at 9.30am on Sunday, April 24, and she will be wearing a blue tee shirt, along with all the other competitors in the U-13 girls’ race.

Shimna College had three other students taking part in the Ulster Schools’ competition — Jodie Cunningham (39th) mini girls, Jack Quinn (54th) senior boys and Laura Greene (64th) intermediate girls.
