Entertainment galore at resort shopping week

28 August 2013

A PACKED programme of live music and events has been drawn up to coincide with Newcastle Shopping Week, which runs from September 7-14.

The programme was unveiled this week by Down Council Chairwoman, Maria McCarthy, and local entertainer, Finbarr Keaveney.

On Saturday, September 7, Newcastle’s Shopping Week takes off when all your favourite superheroes and villains, including Spiderman, Superman and the Star Wars Storm Troopers, will be giving out goodies on the promenade. Then make your way to the Piazza (outside Villa Vinci) where Finbarr will sing live favourites from Buble, Sinatra and Pavarotti.

From Sunday right through to Saturday, September 14, the entertainment continues. Local musical talents Ross Maguire, Donal Scullion and the Castlewellan Accordion Orchestra will perform at different locations throughout the town. There will also be music sessions at the Savoy Café and Macken’s Bar.

On Friday, September 13, from 12noon outside the Newcastle Centre, there will be a record-breaking attempt at the biggest ever live singing performance of Percy French’s Mountain of Mournes.

Other events running during the week include a fitness experience on the Beach, Newcastle fashion day, a craft fair and a taste experience.

Ms. McCarthy said she is looking forward to shopping week.

“Not only do I love shopping but I have been overwhelmed by the support from the Newcastle Chamber, the town’s small businesses and of course Finbarr and all the event organisers,” she said.

“Over 30 home-grown shops are now on board offering a wide range of discounts and special offers throughout the week. Thanks to these great promotions and fabulous entertainment there has never been a better time to plan a shopping trip to Newcastle.

“Look out for voucher booklets in next week’s local papers which will provide more information on the events and fantastic discounts. You can also pick up a booklet from participating stores or from the Newcastle Visitor information Centre.”

This project is managed by Down Council and supported by the Northern Ireland Executive through the Department of Social Development.
