Dylan blitzes way to U-22 All-Ireland title

KILLOUGH has a new All-Ireland boxing star.

Dylan Duffy won the 60kg division at the All-Ireland U-22 Championships in Dublin on Friday night.

The Pegasus ABC pugilist, who was beaten in the senior All-Ireland final only a matter of weeks ago, picked himself up and stormed his way to the crown.

He  started off by beating Terry McEntee from Old School ABC, Monaghan. McEntee, who won a bronze medal at last year’s European Championships, was a tough

nut to crack, but Duffy’s more

accurate boxing won him a points victory to secure a place in the semi-finals.

He then took on Ballydoyle’s Steven Lockhart and fought in a disciplined manner against a determined opponent, who had no answer to the Killough man’s style.

The final pitted Duffy against Galway boxer Marty Salmon. Salmon was a slick moving, counter puncher and winner of several All-Ireland titles.

The final was supposed to be a close affair, but Duffy completely dominated the showdown and proved to be too strong, too quick and too skilful for his opponent.

Dylan has now been named in the Ireland team for the European U-22 Championships in Romania. As part of his preparations, he will spend four weeks in Dublin training with the national squad.
