A DUNDRUM woman and her family are going on a nine mile walk, as part of this year’s Belfast City Marathon, to raise money for the Friends of the Cancer Centre.
Kim Irwin, who has cancer, will be joined by her children Kyle Holmes, Corrina Holmes and Mandie Nicholls for the event on May 6 as they line up with thousands of people taking part in the marathon events.
Kim said: “The work of Friends of the Cancer Centre is relevant and important to all of us and I’m sure that’s why we’re already enjoying such fantastic local support.
“I don’t think for a moment that any of us will be medal material but we’re looking forward to a fantastic day of camaraderie and fun at one of Belfast’s great sporting occasions.
“We know that every step we take is doing something positive for people whose lives have been touched by cancer.
“I was inspired to take part in the Marathon, as my family and I received such warm and supportive care while I was being treated at the Cancer Centre.
“That will be very much front of mind as we get on the running gear on Marathon morning and we’re hoping that knowing it’s all for a good cause will keep us going,” she said.
All money raised by Kim and her children will go to the official charity of the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre to fund specialist posts and research, helping them to provide key resources and comforts for patients and their families.
Claire McAuley, Events and Community Fundraising Manager with Friends of the Cancer Centre, said: “We’re always delighted when anyone decides to give their time, energy and enthusiasm to raise funds for ‘Friends’ and we wish Kim and her family every success on the big day.
“I’d like to wish all our ‘Friends’ competitors good luck for their big day and thank them for their commitment and support. With friends like these the whole community will benefit in the long run,” she said.
