Dundrum suffer against kingpins

29 May 2013

WARINGSTOWN handed out a cricketing lesson to Dundrum on Saturday, inflicting a massive 201 run defeat in the second round of the Ulster Bank Challenge Cup.

On a rare sunny Saturday, The Meadow was looking immaculate thanks to the hard work of the ground staff as Waringstown captain, Kyle McCallen brought his star-studded team which included seven Irish capped players and the superb South African professional Obus Pienaar.

McCallen won the toss and batted first on the dry wicket. Dundrum’s stalwart opening bowler, Lee Connor, almost caused an early shock when James Hall smashed his third ball to mid off where Terry Hutley almost pulled off a stunning catch diving away to his right.

Dundrum got a lucky break in the second over when McCallen was harshly judged lbw to Mark Yeates who almost trapped the dangerous Lee Nelson for 11 but the catch was spilled by Kester Baptiste.

The West Indian came on to bowl and made amends by bowling Hall in the seventh over after the opener had lofted him high over the Moneycarragh River.

Dundrum received an enormous boost when the very dangerous Pieraar was unlucky to be given out caught behind by John Tormey, off the bowling of Yeates, when the ball appeared to have come off his arm.

Waringstown were suddenly 53 for three off 12 overs with Yeates bowling particularly well for figures of two wickets for nine runs off six overs.

It could so easily have been four out when Greg Thompson survived a huge lbw appeal, but that was almost the final chance Dundrum received for some time as Thompson and Lee Nelson settled in to quick running and bad ball punishing.

The pair put on over 100 runs before Gavin McNerlin trapped Nelson for 53.

Thompson continued to punish the bowling, scoring 71, including four sixes, before being bowled by Baptiste.

With Waringstown sitting on 217 runs and 11 overs to go, a huge total looked on the cards, but to their credit Dundrum stuck to their task, fielding and bowling with determination to become the first team this season to bowl out Waringstown — for 266 runs.

Yeates bowled well and finished with figures of nine overs, two maidens, two wickets for 34 runs. Baptiste took four for 53, and McNerlin took two for 44.

Waringstown’s big signing off the winter was Ireland A opening bowler, Phil Eaglestone, and he lost no time in ripping through the Dundrum top order taking three wickets in his first three overs. He took five of the first six batsmen and finished the day with five for 25.

Dundrum had only two players in double figures — Joel Maguire, who twice hit McCallen for six, on his way to 22, and young James Martin who scored 14 — as the innings ended on 65.
