DUNDRUM seconds booked their place in the next round of the Minor Lindsay Cup with a commanding, 73-run win over Saintfield seconds at the Meadow on Saturday.
Captain Keba Butler won the toss and chose to bat first on a dry wicket, but Dundrum suffered an early set-back when opener Matthew Douglas fell for just one, clean bowled by Bailey Hanna.
Further trouble followed as Ian Wright and Noah Stafford departed in quick succession, leaving the hosts in a precarious position at 34 for 3 after nine overs.
However, a spirited recovery was led by Andrew Campbell (38) and Niamh Lowry, who combined powerfully in a game-changing partnership of 85 runs.
Lowry, in particularly fine form, played with composure and flair, reaching a brilliant half-century from just 58 deliveries.
Further impetus was provided by Caleb Armstrong, who struck an aggressive 34 off 24 balls to lift Dundrum to a competitive 196 for 8 from their allotted 30 overs.
In reply, Saintfield lost opener Matthew Scott early, run out superbly by Armstrong, setting the tone for a tense chase.
Roger Smith (10) soon followed, falling to a sharp delivery from Douglas and leaving the visitors struggling at 30 for 2.
A promising partnership between Bruno Caves (27) and Hanna (17) added 67 for the third wicket and threatened to tilt the game back in Saintfield’s favour, especially as Dundrum’s bowlers briefly faltered with a string of extras.
However, the breakthrough came from Ian Wright, who bowled Hanna to break the stand at 97 for 4.
That dismissal sparked a dramatic collapse, as Saintfield’s lower order crumbled under pressure.
The final six wickets fell for just 26 runs, with Dundrum’s pace bowler, Steve Allwright, ripping through the tail.
Allwright finished with outstanding figures of 4 for 19 from his six overs, sealing victory as Saintfield were dismissed for 123.
Dundrum’s young side showed resilience and maturity throughout the match, with contributions across the board in a well-rounded team performance. They now advance to face either CIYMS or Waringstown in the next round.
