Drumaness B team jubilant after triumph in Gerry Rodgers Cup

15 February 2012

IT was perhaps fitting that a Drumaness side would win the Gerry Rodgers Memorial Cup in the Dan Rice Memorial Hall where the late Gerry Rodgers played his billiards.

Stephen Byrne started the final against Bobby Douglas and young Byrne started like a whirlwind with breaks of 29 and 27 before Douglas could put a point on the board.

To his credit, Douglas kept pegging away with a couple of teen breaks, but then Byrne had another 30 break to extend his lead to over 80. Despite valiant efforts by Douglas, Byrne went on to win by 74.

This defeat by 74 was a real blow to St. Michael’s chances, but Colin Flanagan over on table two was in superb form against Martin Singh. Early breaks of 38 and 26 had an out of sorts Singh under pressure and further breaks of 24, 22 and 20 gave the St. Michael’s top player the win by 119 points.

Despite this huge win by Flanagan, Drumaness B were still 105 points in front with Decky Byrne to play Michael O’Donnell. It was now important that O’Donnell get off to a flyer and put the pressure on young Byrne. However, O’Donnell didn’t get the fast start and Byrne seemed to relish the challenge in front of his home supporters and when he reached the required 96 points the final was conceded by St. Michael’s.

• The league would like to thank Drumaness for the use of their clubrooms and also to Mr. Gary Rodgers, Ballynahinch Motor Factors, for his continued generous sponsorship.
