A DOWNPATRICK man has died in a traffic accident while on holiday in the Canary Islands.
Jim Campbell died after being struck by two cars as he walked from the airport to holiday accommodation just before midnight on Wednesday.
The 40 year-old was around 500 metres from the airport when he was struck by a car near a bend in the road. The driver stopped and called the emergency services but before they could arrive Mr Campbell was struck by another car which did not stop.
The second vehicle was later found by the police and the 50 year-old male driver was arrested for driving while under the influence of drugs.
The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust is working with Mr Campbell's family to bring his body home.
Colin Bell, who runs the charity from his Newry home, told Belfast Live: "We have set everything in motion now to get this gentleman home and we'll do our best to make that happen as soon as possible.
"It's another tragedy and another family dealing with a very sad time."
