Down High girls excel to win Junior British League crown

20 February 2013

THREE pupils from Down High School have enjoyed success in national table tennis by winning Division 3 of the Junior British League in West Bromwich last weekend.

Erin Thompson, Laura Finn and her sister Rebecca built upon the excellent foundation laid in the first phase last October by remaining unbeaten as a team in the Midlands competition.

The girls won 55 of the 60 matches played to storm home to a sensational victory.

On top of this the girls have included in the nine-strong Northern Ireland Commonwealth table tennis squad, identified as having the ability or potential to compete for Ulster in inter-provincial events and for Northern Ireland in Commonwealth-related events such as the 2013 championships in India and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

With this incentive, the girls are continuing to work very hard at developing their skills.

Down High School’s head teacher Mr Paul Logan paid tribute to the girls’ achievements and said that Erin, Laura and Rebecca were wonderful ambassadors for the school and are a credit to their families.
