Down Council has welcome for golden girl Bethany

12 September 2012

DOWN Council is to formally recognise the efforts of Seaforde girl Bethany Firth who won gold at the London Paralympic Games.

The golden girl of the swimming pool set a personal best as she claimed victory for Team Ireland in the 100m backstroke final.

The 16 year-old, who has a learning disability, was Northern Ireland’s youngest Paralympian and took up swimming just three years ago.

At Monday night’s meeting of Down Council, local politicians agreed they wanted to recognise the efforts of the Seaforde teenager.

Council chairman Mickey Coogan described Bethany’s gold medal success as a “wonderful achievement” and proposed that officers meet with Bethany and her parents to discuss how best the local authority can recognise her gold medal success.

“We all want to recognise Bethany’s success in the most appropriate way possible,” he added.
