Down Basketball get grant

17 April 2013

DOWN Basketball have been awarded a grant of almost £2,000 to support the development of their work in Ballynahinch.

The funding, from Sported’s Small Grant programme, will allow the group to train people to deliver sessions locally, ensuring the sustainability of the programme.

Down Basketball was initially supported by the PSNI’s Neighbourhood Unit and Down Council to target young people at risk of anti-social behaviour.

Eamon Brennan, of the club’s management committee, said the Sported grant would help them to provide diversionary activity for more young people in the area.

“Getting a basketball kit for a squad of young players heightens their sense of belonging and solidarity in representing their community, helping to build a stronger community for us all,” he said.

Funding and support from the Sported charity is open to its members, who are working with 11-25 year olds and using sport to make a positive impact on their lives. Organisations can apply for membership at sported.org.uk.
