JOHN ‘Shorty’ Treanor’s reign as Castlewellan supremo began in the best possible fashion when his exciting outfit easily swept aside a disappointing challenge from Loughinisland.
The Town were always in control and never looked in any danger of not winning the game.
They were 0-4 to 0-0 ahead after seven minutes and by half-time they were in command by 1-7 to 0-2. Sean Dornan was the goal scorer after he latched on to a good pass from Liam McKibben.
The ‘Island should have had a goal of their own, but Conor O’Reilly’s effort banged off the bar.
Loughinisland manager Kyran Smyth introduced Matt Doran at half-time and this had the effect of boosting the cause. As a result, Rory Mason and John McCarthy came more into the game as the second half ended up level.
Castlewellan always looked the better side as they continued to dictate the pace of the game.
Jamie O’Reilly’s goal for the away side arrived three minutes into injury time, but it was far too little too late.
Best for the winners were Michael Cunningham in goal, Colm Flanagan and Kevin Duffin in defence, Fintan McGreevy in midfield and Rory Burns and Sean Dornan in the attack.
Loughinisland were best served by Conor O’Toole at full back, John McCarthy in midfield and Rory Mason and Jamie O’Reilly in the forward line. Matt Doran also impressed from the bench.
