Delight Kilcoo to receive new restricted speed limit

28 February 2024

ROADS officials have bowed to public pressure to make the centre of Kilcoo safer by introducing a new speed limit.

The current 40mph zone is to be reduced to 30mph following a community campaign led by local politicians.

Confirmation of the news speed limit has been welcomed by South Down MP Chris Hazzard and Mournes councillor Leeanne McEvoy.

Mr Hazzard said while there has been a long campaign to have the reduced speed limit provided, it will soon be in place.

He explained confirmation that a new 30mph limit will be introduced came during a meeting with Department for Infrastructure officials.

“It has been a long campaign to reduce the speed limit through the village, with work from the whole community including the pupils at St Malachy’s Primary School and we are nearly at the finish line,” said the MP.

“I look forward to seeing this work finally completed and hope it will help tackle speeding through the village.

Cllr McEvoy said residents are delighted that the old 40mph signs are finally set to be replaced.

She added: “We hope this will have a positive impact and will help keep drivers, pedestrians and our whole community safer.”
