Declan toughs it out in mud

Declan toughs it out in mud

A YOUNG Downpatrick man who took part in the recent Tough Mudder event in Co. Meath exceeded his fundraising target of £500.

Declan Bianco (23), who has a learning disability and attends the Mountview Adult Training Centre in his home town, was joined by his sister Chantale for the hugely popular event at Old Castle where he was raising money for Down Special Olympics.

The mud and obstacle course is designed to drag competitors out of their comfort zone by testing their physical strength, stamina and mental grit, and Declan thoroughly enjoyed every minute of his experience and looking forward to next year already.

Mum Sylvia said Declan has so far raised £520 with some more money still to come in which will increase his total further.

“Declan really enjoyed the physically demanding event and in addition to his sister Chantale was joined by Gerard McNulty from the Kazoku Karate gym in Castlewellan where he trains,” she explained.

“Everything went extremely well on the day and Declan is really delighted he was able to raise so much money. He wants to thank everyone who supported him on the day when the weather conditions were great.”

Organisers of the Tough Mudder say the challenge is about teamwork and camaraderie and Declan was not long back in his home after the recent event when he was on the internet looking for details about next year’s event.

The 23 year-old, who spends three days each week at Mountview, also works at the Garden Cafe at the St Patrick Centre. His mother is delighted everyone was so supportive and encouraging to Declan in the lead up to the Tough Mudder and during the event itself.

“The weather was kind and Gerard was really impressed with Declan’s performance in finishing the course,” said a delighted mum.

“We are grateful to everyone who supported Declan, enabling him to not only reach, but surpass his fundraising target. He is already looking forward to next year’s event.”
