Dancers show off moves for the camera

THE locally-based Brennan Miskelly McCormick School of Irish Dancing were delighted to have been invited to take part in a film documentary last week, based in the Mourne area.

The young Irish dancers were invited to take part by the Enjoy the Mournes group, which promotes the Mournes area

Josephine Brennan King, principal teacher in the school, received a phone call from Enjoy the Mournes founder Samuel Chestnut asking if she would be interested in working with a visiting production company from Belgium.

“I accepted immediately,” she said. “It was just what we needed for our dancers who hadn’t been able to meet up in person over the lockdown period.”

The students and teachers met with Samuel and the film crew at the ferry terminal in Greencastle, where the Carlingford ferry crosses the border between the north and south of Ireland on a daily basis.

The documentary will be focusing on invisible borders and hopes to be aired in 2021.

“Students from the dance class, ranging in age from six to 16, were very excited to have been chosen to demonstrate how they have come together again after 5 months in lockdown caused by the coronavirus,” Josephine continued.

“The dancers were very enthusiastic. It was a wonderful opportunity for the class. Dancing on the beach, in the sand, was a first for all of them. Everyone enjoyed the experience of being a ‘movie star’ for the day and we are all looking forward to attending the premiere and seeing the final version.

Mr Chestnut said: “It was great to collaborate with Josephine and the school to showcase the dancers, along with locals in the Mourne area.

“The documentary is being filmed by a Belgium production company and a lot of the detail is restricted at the minute. The crew have been in the area for a number of weeks.”
