DUP bids for tough poll seat

DUP bids for tough poll seat

19 March 2014

THE DUP is to field a candidate in the Downpatrick area in the forthcoming local government election.

The party has selected Mrs. Yvonne Moore to contest one of the five seats up for grabs.

Mrs. Moore, who is bidding to secure election to the new Newry, Mourne and Down Council, works as a secretary in Strangford MP Jim Shannon’s constituency office in Ballynahinch.

The election candidate stood for the DUP in the Ballynahinch area at the last local government election and while she was unsuccessful, it hasn’t deterred her from putting her name forward again, this time for the Downpatrick area.

Mrs. Moore firmly believes there are enough unionist votes in the Downpatrick area, which includes the Bells Hill ward for the first time, to secure a seat and is appealing to voters to support her.

“If elected, I promise to give my 100 per cent commitment to the people of Downpatrick and work with the party’s other councillors in the new council to form a strong DUP team,” said Mrs. Moore.

“I have been working for Mr. Shannon for the past four years and know the issues which need to be addressed. They include job creation, planning, benefits and social housing.”

Mrs. Moore, who believes there should be more women in politics, said she’s looking forward to the challenge ahead and working hard to secure one of the five seats available in Downpatrick.

Describing the DUP candidate as a “dedicated member of staff,” Mr. Shannon said she is well respected throughout the Strangford constituency.

He added: “I firmly believe that, if elected, Yvonne will make an excellent councillor for the Downpatrick area.”
