12 December 2018

DOWNPATRICK man Cyril McKinney has been presented with a much-deserved award in recognition of his service to a number of local groups.

Cyril was recently presented with ‘The Extra Mile Award’ which was handed over by the Carers’ Forum for people with a learning disability. The award recognises the good that people do above and beyond their daily work.

Earlier this year Moira Denvir, chairperson of Children Adults Parents And Autism decided to nominate Cyril — who is a social worker with the disability team in Downpatrick — as well as being a full time career. He is also a keen volunteer with a number of different groups.

Cyril was presented with his award by the chairwoman of the Carers’ Forum, Anne Blake, who was joined at the ceremony by the organisation’s secretary, Valerie Martin.

The Downpatrick man volunteers with a number of groups including Helping Hands Romania, Ballynoe Lourdes Appeal and Football Clubs United (NI) which takes people with a learning disability to a three-day event in Geneva, competing with teams other European countries.

In addition, Cyril is Bright GAC’s public relations officer and along with Marty Burns, set up and runs the Downpatrick Sports and Recreation Club.

Cyril has been volunteering for about 42 years and says loves what he does and has made some wonderful friends. His volunteering role is supported by his wife Teresa and his family.
