A ROWALLANE politician has expressed concern about traffic congestion outside St. Colmcille’s High School in Crossgar.
Councillor Robert Burgess said the problem is particularly bad in the afternoon when buses waiting to take pupils home have to park at the nearby Derryboye Road junction in the village.
He is seeking a meeting with Translink officials to discuss the possibility of creating a dedicated parking area close to the Killyleagh Street school.
Councillor Burgess said he has been approached by a number of people about the congestion outside the school and the danger this poses to children leaving St. Colmcille’s.
“Residents who live close to the school and some parents are concerned about the congestion and while there is one area for buses to park, nine times out of 10 it isn’t available as someone has parked on it,” he continued.
The Rowallane councillor believes the Roads Service should also give “serious consideration” to providing a part-time pedestrian crossing outside St. Colmcille’s High School.
“This could operate in the mornings and afternoons and could help make the area much safer. There are a lot of cars and buses outside the school at these times and a crossing would make life easier for all concerned,” added councillor Burgess.
