A GOLF tournament in aid of several local charities has been hailed an outstanding success.
Bright Castle Golf Club was the venue for last Saturday’s event which was graced with brilliant sunshine and superb support from golfers from across the district.
The event was organised by Rowallane councillors Billy Walker and Terry Andrews, who to date have raised in the region of £20,000 for local charities and good causes.
Last Saturday’s event was in aid of Mainstay DRP, Home Start, Pop Up Art, Newcastle RNLI and the Killyleagh and Crossgar Community Associations.
The final total from Saturday’s fundraiser is not yet available, but the local politicians set themselves a target of £3,000 and hope to present each of the six groups with £500.
A number of local businesses also weighed in with their support by sponsoring holes with the Rowallane councillors delighted with the number of people who supported the fundraiser.
“We could not have asked for better weather conditions or support,” said Cllr Walker. ”It was the perfect day and the weather added that little bit of extra sparkle to the event.
“Terry and I are fortunate in that our roles as councillors provides us with an insight into the work of many groups across the district who are all doing wonderful things, helping a diverse range of people.”
Billy said while he and Terry were political rivals, first and foremost they are good friends, who love nothing better than working to help others.
He added: “Thanks to everyone who supported the event. They can be rest assured the money they have helped raise is going to worthy causes.”
Cllr Andrews also thanked everyone who supported the golf fundraiser, explaining the politicians work hard to give something back to the community and local organisations.
“No matter what events we organise, people always step forward with support and that is very humbling. We never cease to be amazed by people’s generosity.”
The councillors would like to the following businesses and individuals for supporting the event: Bright Castle Golf Club, Henderson Spar, Finnebrogue Venison, Ulster Bank, Cherton Enterprises, Dupes Video, Soaring Productions, Glyn Hanna Auto Spares (Ballymartin), Quinn’s Chippy (Crossgar) and Smugglers Table (Killyleagh).
They are also grateful to Elvis Kirk Skip Hire, Bells of Crossgar, Paul Bell of the Prep House Crossgar, Seamus Fitzsimons Funeral Directors, Charles Rourke Funeral Directors, Crossgar Commercial, Roger Morgan and Son, Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairman Mark Murnin, Phoenix Natural Gas and the Rev Stanley Gamble.
