Councillor in plea to tourists over rubbish

TOURISTS at Kilclief beach have been horrified at the amount of litter desecrating this local beauty spot, according to a local councillor.

Cadogan Enright said he was questioned about local litter habits by visiting German tourists over the bank holiday weekend.

Calling on people to take their own rubbish home when picnicking on or near beaches in Lecale, he said: “Over the last few years my family and I have been visiting Kilclief beach on long weekends like many other local people, and we are always impressed at how most people clean up after themselves and leave the beach neat and tidy after their visits.

“However, some people pile their bags of rubbish beside the litter bin on the beach. These are then disturbed by animals and scattered widely.

“Litter bins are meant for small items, not whole shopping bags full of picnic discards.”

Councillor Enright said council staff were doing their best but the public needed to do more.

“Last year I checked that the bins were being emptied daily by council staff, even on bank holidays, and can confirm that council employees arrive about 8am each morning. However, the job would be made far easier and the beach would look a lot better every afternoon if the minority of of people collected their bags and took their rubbish home with them, rather than piling them up at the litter bin.

“I appeal to all picnickers to take their bags home with them and keep Lecale tidy.”
