Council is praised for fencework

SOUTH Down MLA Chris Hazzard has praised Newry, Mourne and Down Council for responding to concerns about two sink holes which appeared close to the Millfield playing fields in Killough.

The Assemblyman highlighted the issue last month, describing the sink holes as a “death trap” and urging the local authority to act given the number of children who play in the area.

Mr Hazzard said a fence has been erected around the area where the sink holes are located to keep children away, praising council officials for acting swiftly. But he made it clear there needs to be a permanent solution to address the issue.

“| raised the issue on behalf of concerned residents in Killough as the sink holes are located close to a play park and many parents were understandably afraid for their children’s safety,” the MLA explained. “As we enter the summer holiday period, children will increasingly explore the environment around the busy play park.”

Mr Hazzard added: “It was vital Newry, Mourne and Down Council urgently addressed the issue of easy access to the area where the sink holes are located with suitable safety barriers to keep children safe. A permanent remedy to this dangerous issue is now needed.”
