A DOWNPATRICK student will be speaking in the European Parliament next year.
Cormac Savage, a Year 12 student at St Patrick’s Grammar School, has been selected as one of 24 young people chosen to represent Ireland in the EU Parliament in Strasbourg in February.
He will be going there as part of Euroscola — a scheme in which young people from all EU member states become Members of European Parliament for the day and debate and vote from within the chamber.
The programme in Ireland is run by the Rotary Club and is called the Youth Development Leadership competition.
Cormac, who is a member of the UK Youth Parliament, was selected by Comber Rotary Club.
He said it was an “honour to be chosen to represent Ireland on the European stage”.
He thanked Mr Crosby McVeigh, a member of Comber Rotary Club, who organised and coordinated the Rotary Club of Comber heat and selection process.
Cormac will leaves for Strasbourg and on February 3 and will return five days later.
He is following the footsteps of Teirnan Laird, from Down High School, last year’s Comber Rotary winner, who went on to win the overall prize at Euroscola 2018 in Strasbourg last spring.
Meanwhile, there were more celebrations for Comber Rotary Club when Aaron Blaine, a pupil at Killinchy Primary School, won the All-Ireland young writer competition.
Aaron chose as his topic ‘A Dream that Changed Everything’ – a story about a fox and a man called Ron.
One of the judges, Kathryn Torney described Aaron’s story as “energetic, thoughtful and extremely well written”, while Meg Healey, Rotary District Youth Chairperson, looked forward to seeing his name in the bookshops with a best seller as he has a bright future ahead of him.
