ARDGLASS golfer Cormac Sharvin enhanced his chances of a Walker Cup call-up when he finished second in the Irish Amateur Championship at the weekend.
Sharvin secured the runners-up spot at Royal Dublin on Sunday in sensational style. The 22 year-old fired a 192-yard rescue club to ten feet and holed the putt for brilliant birdie.
His closing 72 gave him a one under par total of 287 for the four rounds, which left him three adrift winner Gavin Moynihan, from The Island Golf Club, just a short distance from Royal Dublin.
It was Sharvin’s second runners-up finish in a row, having finished second in the Lytham Trophy a week earlier at Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s, venue for the transatlantic Walker Cup match in September.
A few days earlier, the local rising star retained his British Universities title at St. Andrews and also helped Stirling University to the team title.
Not surprisingly, he’s delighted with his form at present.
“Obviously I’m pretty happy,” he said. “I played pretty nicely all week. To come in here after an exam with no practice round and come second seems to be a bit of an omen because I did the same in the Lytham Trophy.
“I can’t complain about coming second. I didn’t take my chances on the front nine and went out in two over.
“But to finish the way I did, hitting rescue to ten feet after taking seven down the last gives me a lot of confidence.”
