Copper stolen at St. Patrick Centre

Copper stolen at St. Patrick Centre

4 April 2012 - by Ciara Colhoun

THE director of the St Patrick Centre has spoken of his disgust after thousands of pounds of copper sheeting was stolen during an early morning raid on Monday.

Around 60 feet of copper was torn from the walls of the building at around 8am. This is the second time the centre has been targeted by criminals in this way in the past two years.

Dr. Tim Campbell said he was horrified that the centre, which is “already struggling” due to recession, had been dealt an “additional blow.”

He said it was unlikely the insurance company which covers the centre would pay for the damage because the criminals responsible did not gain entry to the building.

He said staff were hopeful the culprits would be found after CCTV footage showed a clear image of a man.

“The centre is already struggling so this is the last thing we need,” he said.

“It is an additional blow to us.”

Police in Downpatrick have appealed for information following the metal theft, which they said included copper and lead.

Anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in this area is asked to contact Downpatrick Police Station on 0845 600 8000. Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
