Congestion fears at Loughinisland

27 March 2013

MOTORISTS avoiding traffic congestion in Ballynahinch are having a major impact in the Loughinisland area, according to a local politician.

South Down Assemblyman Chris Hazzard said minor roads around the village are becoming increasingly busy, catering for a volume of traffic they were never designed to accommodate.

The MLA said the road at The Heights is affected by drivers by-passing Ballynahinch and confirmed he has asked the Roads Service to carry out a survey to determine how many vehicles are using it.

“I have no doubt that this small rural road is not fit to carry the volume of traffic currently using it. Vehicles pulling in to let others pass are damaging grass verges and I have asked roads officials to look at the possibility of providing dedicated passing areas,” he continued.

Mr. Hazzard said local people are concerned about the strength of a small culvert running under the road at The Heights and has asked for a survey.
