A LECTURER at the South Eastern Regional College’s campus in Downpatrick has secured a top teaching award.

Alpana Sharma was presented with a distinction award at the prestigious Pearson Teaching Awards for further education teachers in Northern Ireland.

An Early Years lecturer, Alpana was nominated for her award by a group of her students, inspired by her dedication to achieve their very best.

“I am lost for words and very shocked. I wasn’t expecting this at all,” said a delighted Alpana.

“I am honoured that the students have nominated me as this is the best accolade you can get. The students see you every day and the fact that they put me forward is the biggest reward of all.”

College principal and chief executive, Ken Webb, said the organisation is

“delighted for Alpana and very proud of her achievement.”

He said the further education sector in Northern Ireland plays a huge role in helping everyone in the community and supporting economic growth through skills development.

Mr. Webb added: “Alpana is a great example of the quality of teaching within the sector.”

The Pearson Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers and teaching. Founded in 1999 by Lord Puttnam, the awards recognise the life-changing impact of an inspirational teacher on the lives of the young people they teach.
