Codd on fire at sunny Downpatrick evening

RECENTLY crowned Irish champion amateur jockey Jamie Codd showed his prowess in the saddle when riding a hat-trick of winners at a sunny Downpatrick on Friday evening.

The Wexford rider gave his followers plenty to smile about with a 20/1 treble courtesy of trainer Gordon Elliott and finished runner-up on his only other mount in the hunters’ chase.

Codd got his evening off to the perfect start when winning the maiden hurdle on Elliott’s Westland Row who had just over two lengths to spare over Derek Fox on Atlantic Breaker with Sean Flanagan half a length back on the Noel Meade-trained favourite, Classic Place.

Elliott and Codd combined for their second winner in the handicap hurdle when favourite Presenting Julio gave supporters something to cheer about.

They also joined forces claim a hat-trick of winners when Penny Jane improved on a decent effort at Fairyhouse last time out to land the spoils in the bumper when denying Noel Meade’s 11/8 favourite Frankiefiveangels by a neck with Dot Love’s Thinkinginmysleep a good way back in third.

Galway trainer Shane Ryder made the journey worthwhile when saddling 8/1 chance Mysticaltou to land the feature race at the meeting, the Ciaran Russell Auto Sales Mares’ Handicap Hurdle, under B Browne.

Noel Meade and stable jockey Sean Flanagan combined with even money favourite Fly Rory Fly to win the K For King Maiden Hurdle when proving three parts of a length superior to local jockey Chris Meehan on Polymath, trained for Gigginstown House Stud by Gordon Elliott.

Former top rider Andrew McNamara and jockey Conor Brassil took the handicap chase when bottom weight Kilderry Prince got the better of Tommy Brett on Willow Grange by a neck with a long gap back to third placed Theatre One under Derek Fox for trainer Caroline McCaldin.

Mark Fahey’s Kildare raider Cant Pay Wont Pay thwarted Codd’s chances of a four-timer when getting the better of odds-on favourite Mullaghmurphy Blue in the hunters’ chase with Isn’t She Lovely finishing in third under Mark O’Hare for Katesbridge trainer Jerry Cosgrave.
