MOURNES councillor Willie Clarke has this week clarified the proposal to close to Donard car park overnight using automated barriers.
He said the plan is to close the car park to incoming vehicles from 11pm.
“There has been some inaccurate information shared online regarding Newry, Mourne and Down Council’s proposed plans for automated barriers at Donard Park,” said Cllr Clarke.
“I want to reassure residents, businesses and all park users that full consultation will take place with everyone affected.”
Cllr Clarke explained the proposal under consideration would see the two car parks in Donard Park locked to incoming vehicles from 11 pm, to prevent anti-social driving and noise disturbances which have caused significant distress to nearby residents.
However, he said any vehicles already parked at that time would still be able to leave unhindered, at 11pm, but that after that motorists in the park would either have to park their vehicle up or leave the car park.
“Importantly,” he continued, “residents who require access during these hours, as well as emergency services, will continue to have unrestricted entry and exit.
“The intention is not to inconvenience genuine users but to target the small number of individuals engaging in reckless behaviour. “
Cllr Clarke said council officers will engage directly with local businesses, Autism Initiatives, sports clubs, care homes, schools, emergency services and residents to ensure their views are fully reflected before any decision is taken.
He said these measures, in tandem with CCTV coverage, are being explored to improve safety and community wellbeing.
“The aim of this proposal is to protect residents’ peace and safety while ensuring fair access for those who use the park responsibly. We will continue to work with all stakeholders to develop a balanced and effective solution,” added Cllr Clarke.
