TRAFFIC wardens are set to clamp down on motorists parking in a pedestrianised area of Downpatrick.
SDLP MLA Colin McGrath has received confirmation from the Department for Infrastructure that enforcement action is being taken in response to concerns raised about vehicles regularly parking in Scotch Street.
Mr McGrath, who has been contacted by local residents and businesses, wrote to the Department seeking clarification on the enforcement approach and whether further steps could be taken to address the problem.
He said: “The Department has confirmed that traffic attendants are on Scotch Street several times a day, Monday to Saturday, and have issued a number of penalty notices to vehicles parked in the pedestrian area.
“They also confirmed that a large number of drivers are moving their vehicles when challenged by attendants, which, while permitted, underlines that the issue is ongoing.”
Mr McGrath continued: “I have been assured that my concerns will be raised with the Department’s enforcement provider and that additional patrols may be deployed in Scotch Street when resources allow.
“I welcome this commitment and hope it brings some relief to those who are rightly frustrated that a pedestrianised area is not always being respected.”
Mr McGrath added: “I know nobody likes the idea of a parking fine, but we have to strike a balance here. Scotch Street is pedestrianised to allow people to safely walk, shop and enjoy the town centre.
“There are clear exemptions for business access, blue badge holders and deliveries at certain times – but otherwise, vehicles should not be parking there.
“I will continue to raise this issue to make sure Scotch Street works as intended – as a safe, welcoming, pedestrian-friendly part of our town.”
