Christmas reception for voluntary groups

Christmas reception for voluntary groups

23 December 2015

REPRESENTATIVES from voluntary and charitable groups across the district gathered at the Great Hall in Downpatrick last week.

They were the special guests at a Spirit of Christmas reception hosted by Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairwoman, Naomi Bailie.

She thanked guests for the work they carry out across the district on behalf of many people, commending their hard work and commitment, always giving selflessly to their respective communities.

Ms Bailie said since her appointment as the district’s first citizen, she has travelled “throughout our wonderful district” to meet as many communities as possible.

She continued: “During this time, I have been truly humbled and in awe of the outstanding contribution of our voluntary and charitable sectors. Day after day you work tirelessly within your respective organisations, on behalf of some of the most vulnerable and marginalised within our society.

“Others here today work to ensure our culture, history and heritage is treasured and preserved for generations to come. Please be assured that I and the Council recognise that your dedication, commitment, foresight and ability, make a very real difference within our district and I thank you most sincerely for your efforts throughout the year.”

The council chairwoman said the local authority’s mission is to “lead and serve” a district that is prosperous and healthy, as well as sustainable from an economic, environmental and social perspective.

In addition, Councillor Bailie stressed that the collaboration of the voluntary and charitable sectors, working alongside Newry, Mourne and Down Council, is vital to the achievement of this aim for the district.

During last week’s reception, guests were treated to some festive refreshments, with the district’s first citizen taking the opportunity to speak with them informally to hear more about their work and to personally thank them for their outstanding contributions.
