A NEWCASTLE teenager has had a summer to remember after earning a place on a performing arts academy summer school run by a successful pop star.

Chloe Brannigan (18) took part in the Pixie Lott Performing Arts Academy in Chelmsford, Essex, in August.

Chloe, who has been involved in performing arts since she was nine years old, is a member of Newcastle Glees Musical Society and Mourne Stars Speech and Drama, which have helped her grow in confidence and skill over the years.

The five-day summer school led by Mama Do hitmaker Pixie – who is also an actress and was a contestant on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2014 – included singing, dancing and acting workshops.

“The teaching team were incredible – supportive, encouraging and passionate about helping each of us bring out the best in ourselves,” Chloe said.

“We were introduced to different performance techniques, from learning how to polish a song to exploring brand new dance styles, including street dance, which was both challenging and exciting for me.”

Chloe said one of the stand-out moments of the week was the chance to audition in front of 34 year-old Pixie, which she described as “one of the most thrilling experiences I’ve had on my theatre journey”.

“To my delight, I was given the role of Tallulah in our short version of Bugsy Malone. Preparing for this role, alongside working on other ensemble pieces, pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me memories I’ll never forget.”

After a week of rehearsals, all participants performed in a 90-minute showcase for Pixie, family members and friends.

“Our Beatles medley had the audience clapping along,” she remarked. Chloe said the summer school was made even more special by Pixie herself.

“She was warm, approachable and genuinely encouraging to everyone who took part.

“She took the time to speak to us, offer advice and cheer us on. Having someone of her talent and success show such kindness and interest in our performances was truly inspiring and something I will never forget.

“This summer school wasn’t just about learning lines, lyrics, and dance steps — it was about being inspired, trying new things and discovering just how much joy performing can bring.”

She added: “It was an experience I will treasure forever.”
