Castlewellan Lake closes due to dangerous algae

23 September 2020

CALLS have been issued for an investigation after Castlewellan Lake was closed to the public for the second time this year after the appearance of an algae which breaches water quality safety standards.

Described as being bluey green in colour, the bloom of algae in the lake — located in the grounds of the town’s forest park — poses a danger to humans and animals.

A sign erected at the lake warns people against entering the water, touching it or fishing in the area as the algae may produce toxins which pose a serious risk to human health if contacted or ingested.

The public has also been warned that toxins may also accumulate in fish and is being urged to keep pets away from the water until samples have been analysed by scientists.

Local councillor Andy McMurray has appealed to people to heed the advice they are being given to stay away from the lake which is a dedicated area of special scientific interest.

He says he has been informed that the bloom of algae has breached the lake’s water quality standards and urged people to be careful.

“No activity is permitted on the lake and anglers are asked not to consume any fish caught from the waterway,” he said.

“This is obviously disappointing given the lake’s popularity amongst locals and visitors alike for recreational purposes. It is concerning given that this is the second time this year which such a bloom has occurred.”

Cllr McMurray said given that the algae has appeared for a second time this year, the lake needs to be monitored with investigations carried out to determine the cause.

He added: “Following the investigation, action needs be taken by the relevant agencies responsible to prevent this becoming something which permanently damages the lake.”
