Castlenavan quarry set to get major expansion

31 August 2016

ONE of the district’s largest quarries is set for major expansion.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council’s Planning Committee will later this evening formally approve a planners’ recommendation to extend the CES quarry at Castlenavan, located on the Newcastle Road near Seaforde.

Planners are approving plans to extract around 250,000 tonnes of rock down to a depth of 15 metres, with the life expectancy of the expanded quarry area estimated at 15 years.

Ahead of tonight’s meeting of the local authority’s Planning Committee, politicians have been told gritstone is to be extracted from the extended quarry operation and will be done by drilling and blasting.

The quarry’s operating hours remain the same and will continue to be from 7am until 6pm from Monday to Friday and from 7am until noon on Saturday. The quarry is closed on Sunday and no objections to extending the south west corner of the Castlenavan site have been lodged with planners.
