GORDON Kirkpatrick’s President’s Day ended in a photo finish when 164 competitors took to the challenging fairways of Spa for the club’s final ‘major’ of the season.
Edgar Carson and David McCullough both finished on 40 points while three other players — Michael Megoran, Ciaran Poland and Robert McCurry — each recorded 39 points.
But it was Carson who was declared the president’s champion due to a better back nine.
Afterwards he said he had played quite a number of courses this year but in his opinion none came close to Spa which was now exceptional, reflecting the sterling work being done by so many committees, officials, individual members and staff.
Spa’s ladies played for the president’s prizes on the previous day with Lynsey Martin taking first prize while Lisa Dalzell was the runner-up.
Club captain Mike Porter said the president had served Spa Golf Club with great distinction in every important office. He was one of the most respected members of the club and richly deserved the honorary membership accolade he was accorded last year.
The president thanked all club officers, members and staff, as well as his family, for their support and cooperation in making the day such a success.
He congratulated the winners, but said those who had not been successful were equally important to the club and wished them better luck in the future.
Lady captain Pam Trohear said the president’s prizes had been “exceptional” and she hoped the president would take many great memories from his special day.
