A LOCAL councillor has welcomed news that electric vehicle charging points will be installed in Ballynahinch.
The confirmation came at a recent meeting of Newry, Mourne and Down Council’s Economy, Regeneration and Tourism Committee.
Rowallane councillor, Callum Bowsie, said the new charging points will be located at the Lisburn Street car park in the market town.
It was also agreed at the committee meeting that existing charging points in Donard Park car park in Newcastle would be upgraded.
Cllr Bowsie said the lack of EV charging points across the constituency is an issue which has been raised with him repeatedly over the years.
“Some years ago, many drivers were encouraged by the government to buy electric cars but hadn’t anticipated that the charging infrastructure to support that new demand would be so lagging,” he said.
“While the future of e-cars seemed more certain in the 2010s, the infrastructure for e-cars currently on the road is still needed.”
Cllr Bowsie said considering the hundreds of electric or hybrid cars in Ballynahinch, the introduction of the town’s first EV charging point in 2025 was “long overdue”.
He added: “The proposed site in Ballynahinch was clearly marked out for EV charging points more than 10 years ago under the Department for Infrastructure, but was never installed.”
