Call for expansion of Delamont park

Call for expansion of Delamont park

15 November 2017

THE need to expand and develop Delamont Country Park on the shores of Strangford Lough has been highlighted by local SDLP officials.

South Down MLA Colin McGrath is backing moves by Newry, Mourne and Down Council to look at how the popular facility can be made even better, suggesting the facility offers “huge potential.”

He said: “Delamont is definitely one of our local treasures, but it could be better promoted and has the potential to make more of a contribution to our local tourism product.

“We are so fortunate to have the Mournes and St Patrick’s Country and Delamont Country Park  plays a huge part in outdoor recreation, tying in with the local council’s corporate plan which encourages people to live a more active and healthy lifestyle.”

Rowallane councillor Terry Andrews, a keen supporter of the country park, said he appreciated the effort and hard work of staff to keep Delamont in such excellent condition.

“I recognise the key potential the park offers and believe that providing more facilities will attract a greater number of visitors, producing an economic spin-off to not only the park, but surrounding towns and villages,” he said.

“I look forward to engaging and working with the local council and agencies in pushing Delamont Country Park forward.”

Rowallane SDLP branch chairwoman Margaret Ritchie described Delamont as a “rich and invaluable resource” to those who love the countryside and are searching a haven to walk and recreate in tranquil surroundings with their family.

“As part of the cross departmental emphasis on health and well-being, what better way to do that than ensuring that the country park reflects the requirements of those individuals and families who are looking for a peaceful walking experience,” she said.

Miss Ritchie said a key aspect of the local authority’s tourism strategy was to explore developments that have an emphasis on experience.

She added: “What better way to do that than through further developments to the buildings and walled gardens at Delamont, so all those prospective walkers can expect a holistic experience to the countryside.”
