Brilliant Bredagh

31 October 2012

BREDAGH produced a dazzling display of explosive hurling at Casement Park on Sunday to secure the Ulster Club junior hurling crown.

The South Belfast side started like a runaway train and a goal and four points inside the first 12 minutes from the talented Lorcan McMullan (inset) had Bredagh 1-4 to 0-0 clear.

Donal Hughes tagged on a point before Daryl Connolly registered Na Magha’s first score in the 14th minute with a point from play. Malachy Scullin and Brendan Quigley exchanged points before McMullan again split the posts to send Bredagh into a 1-7 to 0-2 lead with 16 minutes gone.

Alan Grant reduced the leeway when he blasted a penalty to the net in the 18th minute, but McMullan effortlessly fired over the bar to give Bredagh a six point lead.

Diarmuid Sheils caught Bredagh napping at the back and when his shot dipped past Jack Anderson and into the net, there was only three points in it.

Back came Bredagh and points from Scullin and Paul Doole gave their side a 1-10 to 2-2 lead, but Na Magha had the last say of the half when Declan Foley converted a 21m free to leave his side trailing by four points at the break.

Na Magha were first on the scoreboard in the second period through Shiels, though Aidan Donaghy replied with a well taken free. Na Magha then managed a goal through Tamar Douban to cut Bredagh’s lead to a single point.

Galway lofted over a 65m free and with 39 minutes gone Scullin poked the ball home to give Bredagh a 2-12 to 3-4 lead. Foley kept Na Magha ticking over with a pointed free, but a couple of minutes later Paul Kelly hit the post with a rasper and sharp shooter, Aidan Donaghy, pounced on the rebound to send the sliotar into the corner of the net.

As the game moved into the final quarter, Bredagh started to turn the screw with another point from McMullan and a pointed free from Galway.

Scullin then grabbed his second goal of the game before Sean O’Donnell and Shields (2) lofted over points for Na Magha.

Bredagh finished on a high and unanswered points from Kelly, Hughes and Galway had the South Down side well clear at the final whistle.
