Bright’s Victor is player of the year

17 October 2018

THE East Down Churches Table Tennis League held its annual presentation night, which had been postponed from last spring, in French’s, Clough, on Friday evening.

There was a good turnout of players from all clubs and friends of the league. The league, Handicap League, Knockout Cup and individual titles were presented by league president Oswald Copes.

As usual, league secretary Michael Carey selected a few special award winners and these popular prizes were presented by league chairman Derek McCann.

The first of these prizes was for the most improved player and there was no question that Graham Davison was a worthy winner.

It was a surprised, but delighted Victor Edgar of Bright that the received player of the year trophy, but he did have an excellent season.

Not everyone can be called a good sport, but it was clear from the reception received that Annahilt’s Mervyn Cairns was a worthy recipient of the sportsman of the year award.

This was a popular choice, but the biggest cheer of the evening was reserved for Vincey Poland, from St John’s, when it was declared that he had won the club man of the year — a well deserved honour as he does a lot of organising for table tennis in the local area.

The final award — the funny one — went to Tom Garvey, also from St John’s. As all players who have ever played against Tom will know, he takes ages to serve, so he received a trophy known as The league’s Slowest Server.

The league chairman paid a special tribute to the league secretary and the league treasurer, James Sterling, for all the work they do to make the league the success that it has been over many years.

A special thank you to Roy French and his staff for the excellent, friendly service and superb meal on an a very enjoyable evening.
