Bras galore as brownies help charity

BROWNIES in Comber were recently involved in a rather unique initiative to help women in third world countries.

They set out to collect as many bras as they could for women in a number of these particular countries who do not wear them. While the initial target was 150, a staggering 1,000 bras were donated.

Comber Brownies wanted to do their bit to boost an appeal which was being spearheaded by the Girl Guides. The aim of the Comber girls was for each of them to collect four bras which would have resulted in an overall total of 150.

But as word of the appeal spread and emails were sent, a number ended up on computers of staff across the South Eastern Health Trust and the bras literally started arriving from all parts.

Some arrived at the Trust’s Home 3 admin block at the Ulster Hospital in little discrete packages, while some of the other packages were not as discrete. But that didn’t matter as they were being donated to a great cause.

Liz Mercer, leader in charge of Comber Brownies, said the organisation is indebted to everyone who has supported the bra-collecting challenge.

“As a result of the generosity of staff across the South Eastern Trust, many friends and families we collected over 1,000 bras. On behalf of 1st Comber Brownies, thank you to everyone for your support,” she added.
