Books of condolence opened across district

30 April 2025

NEWRY, Mourne and Down Council has opened books of condolence following the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday.

A book of condolence will be available for signing until next week at the Downshire Civic Centre in Downpatrick.

Arrangements will be made for additional books of condolence at the Dan Rice Hall in Drumaness, Newcastle Centre and Killyleagh’s Bridge Centre. They will be available for signing during normal opening hours.

Council chairperson Pete Byrne said the passing of Pope Francis had brought “profound sorrow” across the district.

He remarked: “He was a truly great spiritual leader who championed the poor and marginalised and constantly demonstrated remarkable humility and courage.

“His message of mercy and inclusion resonated throughout the world. At such a significant time it is important to allow our residents the opportunity to pay their own tributes and respects.”

All condolence messages recorded by the council will be sent directly to the Vatican in Rome.

An online book of condolence is also available for signing at www.newrymournedown.org/chairpersons-book-of-condolences.

The Mayor of Ards and North Down Borough Council has also opened an online book of condolence.

Cllr Alistair Cathcart said he was saddened by Pope Francis’ recent passing.

He remarked: “I know that he was held in deep affection by many in our borough and I offer my deepest condolences to the Catholic community and all those who mourn his passing.”
