Bogus callers lead to new campaign for Down residents

30 January 2013

SEVERAL bogus caller incidents in the district, has prompted Down Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) to remind residents how to keep safe.

Along with the PSNI, they are particularly recommending the Quick Check telephone service to check the identity of all callers — some of whom try to trick their way into homes to steal valuables and money.

While it is geared towards the most vulnerable, the 24 hour Quick Check Freephone number on 0800 013 22 90 is available for everyone.

Leaflets on the service are available from the PCSP Office at Down District Council’s offices, by telephoning 028 4461 0800 or from a PSNI crime prevention officer. The leaflets have a peel off sticker with the Freephone number printed on it, which can be stuck to telephones for a quick reminder.

PCSP chairwoman, councillor Carmel O Boyle, said local residents needed to be more proactive in checking out callers to their homes.

“We have noticed that this type of crime is on the increase within our district and are reminding everyone to use the Quick Check Freephone number,” she said.

“We all need to take steps to protect ourselves from this type of crime. If the caller is genuine he will not mind waiting to have his identity checked.”

A PSNI spokesperson added: “Allowing a rogue trader into your home or garden also carries the risk of allowing a stranger with no verifiable identification or recommendation onto your premises where they can see your valuables and ways into your home.

“Such ‘traders’ normally do not carry identification, are reluctant to give an estimate in writing and will normally ask for cash.”
