Blooming Dundrum awash with artwork

Blooming Dundrum awash with artwork

BRIGHTLY planted flower boxes along Dundrum’s Main Street were already bringing a new dash of colour to the village, but now they’re even more eye-catching.

In a scheme run by Creative Village Dundrum, local amateur artists have produced  linocut artwork of the magnificent landscapes and wildlife around the village.

These have now been attached to the flower planters, making them a real source of interest for locals and visitors alike.

Linocut involves tracing an image on to a block of linoleum, carving it into the lino, then making a print. It’s a lengthy and complex process.

Cecilia Halloran, who ran the “People and Place” course at the CVD Hub, said: “Linocut is a form of  printmaking. The artist transfers an image on to a block of linoleum; the image is then carved into the surface of the lino and inked to produce a print.”

Cecilia said all the artists should be “extremely proud of their commitment and creativity”.

South Down Signs digitally reproduced the lino prints on to the aluminium panels now attached to the planters.

The planters were supplied to the village by Newry, Mourne and Down Council and are now in the care of the Dundrum Village Association.

The DVA’s Marcus Orsi said: “We’re hoping that local businesses will volunteer to adopt the planters and help look after them year round, in return for having their names on the boxes.”

The boxes were replanted for summer by the local Cunningham’s Nursery.

Philip Campbell, from Down Community Arts, which funded the project, thanked the Arts Council for their support and praised Cecilia as the creative mind and driving force behind the project.

He said he was proud of DCA’s commitment to community projects across the council area and he looked forward to further projects with Creative Village Dundrum.
