Bid to stop odours in Downpatrick

28 August 2013

STEPS have been taken in a bid to prevent foul odours which have been hanging over parts of Downpatrick.

Northern Ireland Water (NIW) has installed a series of odour prevention measures in a bid to prevent the intermittent smells which have been occurring in the Ardmeen Green and Vianstown Road areas.

Seven airtight manhole covers have been put in place at Ardmeen Green where the smells are most prominent, and a carbon vent has been put in place at the Knocknashinna estate.

The moves have been welcomed by Downpatrick councillor Eamonn Mac Con Midhe who was recently briefed by NIW officials, along with other Sinn Fein officials, on the new measures.

Councillor Eamon Mac con Midhe said one pub owner in the town was forced to call drain services in an attempt to resolve the smell issue, before his business suffered.

“At this stage we cannot be sure of the exact cause of the smells so an investigation is currently underway and I look forward to learning the outcome in the coming weeks.

“We will meet with NI Water again on September 5 to assess the situation at that time,” he said.
