Barry’s agony after bad Border break

DOWNPATRICK’S Barry Treacy will miss the Christmas Border Cup final after breaking his leg.

The influential winger, who is a crucial member of the Downpatrick side, fractured a bone in his lower right leg in a tackle against Lisburn Rangers on Saturday.

The injury will put him out of action for at least six weeks and he has no chance of recovering in time for the Border showdown with Rathfriland Rangers at Seaview.

“I am absolutely devastated,” the 29 year-old told the Recorder last night.

Treacy said he knew immediately that something was badly wrong. His worst fears were confirmed when he underwent a scan the following morning.

“This is the worst injury I’ve ever had. I’ve never experienced anything like this before,” he remarked.

Treacy played in last season’s Clarence Cup final, which was probably his best performance for the club, and in the Border Cup final two years ago.

He was looking forward to locking horns with Rathfriland keeper Shane Morrison — the pair were team-mates at Mourne Rovers for a time.

It’s a terrible blow for Treacy, a renowned fitness fanatic who trains six nights a week.

“It will be strange cheering the boys on from the stands at Seaview, but they will have my full support,” he said.

Even though Downpatrick have lost their last seven cup finals, Treacy says there is no jinx hanging over the club.

“We haven’t taken our chances in previous finals,” he continued. “Our football has been good, but we haven’t had the rub of the green when it matters.

“Rathfriland are a good side, but we are a band of brothers who love attacking and the new surface at Seaview will suit us down to the ground.

“We have the players to unlock any defence and if we can keep it tight at the back then the Border Cup will be on its way back to Downpatrick.”
