Ballynahinch seconds hit the exit door in Junior Cup

12 November 2014

BALLYNAHINCH seconds travelled to Omagh on Saturday to face the Qualifying 2 leaders Omagh Academicals in the Junior Cup.

The Accies were unbeaten this season and unbeaten at home in the past 18 months, so this was always likely to be a tough fixture.

Omagh raced into an early lead when they turned over ‘Hinch in their own half and the scrum half kicked the ball in behind. The home side won the race for the touchdown and the successful conversion moved them 7-0 ahead.

The ‘Hinch set piece was faltering, which led to the backs gaining limited possession.

Omagh were dictating the tempo and a successful penalty pushed them 10-0 ahead.

‘Hinch replied just before half time when Davy Harris converted a penalty to leave the score 10-3 in the home side’s favour.

The second half was again an even contest, with Harris exchanging penalties with his opposite number. Omagh scored a second try from a break down the blind side of a scrum and this pushed them ahead 18-6.

‘Hinch pulled together and finally broke through the home side’s defence for a score from Chris Orr that Harris converted.

They threw everything at the hosts, who held firm and recorded a deserved victory.

This was a disappointing result, but it will prove a learning experience for a young side who had nine of the starting XV under the age of 21.

Hinch will now focus on the league where they face a tough run of fixtures up to the Christmas period, beginning with Ards seconds at home on Saturday.
